Gmail’s New Interface & Features

Did you read about the new Gmail iPhone interface? I would not have known about it if I didn’t read it from the Gmail blog. I’m still using iPhone firmware version 1.1.1 and it still has the original “iPhone” look. I took a screenshot of the original Gmail iPhone interface but I could not transfer it to my computer as I do not have iBrickr now after my programme was wiped out during the recent hard disk crash and I still have problems downloading any programme files. I tried searching for a similar image online but it looks like nobody posted it online so I gave up searching.

Well, this is how the new Gmail interface on the iPhone looks like.

According to the Gmail blog, Gmail not only has a new look now but also the following new features:

  • Auto-complete when composing
  • Automatic refreshing
  • Faster load times when viewing email
  • Besides these new features, according to the Gmail blog, Gmail accounts on the iPhone are now set to IMAP access automatically which means that every action that you take on your Gmail email on your iPhone will be synced with your Gmail on the web, unless you manually configure it to POP access.

Now, I don’t know what happened but it seems that this has only been so since the release of iPhone firmware version 1.1.3. I don’t know about other Gmail iPhone users but my Gmail account on the iPhone has always been set to IMAP access. All mails sent or deleted from my Gmail on the iPhone are reflected in my Gmail account accessed on the computer.

However, although it is IMAP access and I have set it to retrieve my emails automatically every 15 minutes, which is the shortest interval available to me, I don’t recall that these emails actually did arrive on my iPhone lately, so much so that I have to retrieve them manually. Just like my Yahoo! Mail on the iPhone, my mails arrived when the account was newly set up but they no longer do. Something must have screwed up somewhere.

Well, I better troubleshoot my system and see why my ZiPhone and iBrickr downloads returned error messages. I would like to upgrade my firmware soon.
