AT&T Contract-Free 8GB iPhone 3G @ US$599
As half the world is waiting for the iPhone 3G which will be available in the United States and a handful of countries come 11th July, 2008, AT&T came out with an iPhone 3G offer that is contract-free.
We all know that after the announcement of AT&T’s iPhone 3G plans last week, many potential subscribers or upgraders from iPhone 2G are unhappy. They say that the plan is too expensive and does not come bundled with free SMS texting.
Now comes this offer from AT&T where by paying a premium of US$400 on top of the retail price of US$199 for an 8GB iPhone 3G, you will not be forced to sign a two-year data contract with AT&T However, you will still be locked to AT&T. This means that in order for the iPhone to work, you will still need to sign an AT&T contract, just not the one tailored for iPhone 3G, if that is what you do not want.
According to people who are familiar with AT&T’s contract policies, if you buy a phone from AT&T and sign a contract but return it within 30 days for some dissatisfaction or another, you will be free from the contract, get your money back but you will have to return your device.
If you cancel your contract after the 30-day no questions ask money back warranty, you will have to pay a maximum US$175 contract termination fee (or deduct US$5 for each month that you owned the device), but you get to keep the device. This means that if you do this, you will only be paying a contract-free iPhone 3G for US$374.
So who would want to pay US$599 for a contract-free iPhone 3G yet will still have to subscribe to AT&T? I guess this magic figure came because AT&T saw how people willingly paid this sum for their 2G iPhone.
I say, get your hands on an iPhone 3G whatever way you could and wait for the hackers to jailbreak and unlock it. LOL
